Physical Plant of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Records, 1904-1963

The university's Physical Plant Department was created in the mid-1930s and assigned responsibility for the operation and maintenance of campus facilities and grounds and for the provision of utilities. Those functions previously had been performed by a separate Buildings Department and Grounds Superintendent. By the late 1990s, the functions of the Physical Plant Department had been absorbed by Facilities Services. Records include scattered administrative files, 1930-1950s, and blueprints of various campus buildings and utilities, 1904-1963. Some of the latter are original construction plans; others are renovation plans. Included are sewer system plans dated 1922, 1936, and 1949 for parts of the campus and town of Chapel Hill.
